Chapter 15

After an exciting evening with Charles, followed by a good night’s sleep, Sarah entered the quilting area eager for her first class. Thinking back over the evening, she was glad she had decided to bring two cocktail dresses. The floor show was in one of the elegant dinner clubs, and she was able to dress up and still have another dress for the formal dinner. Charles seemed to have been taken aback when she opened the stateroom door dressed in a sleek black dress and matching heels. He was accustomed to seeing her in casual clothes and was overwhelmed. “You’re dazzling,” he had said.

Sarah pulled the schedule out of her packet and headed for Classroom B. There were already several women at workstations. She chose a table close to the front of the room, assuming that was where Stephanie would be standing. She opened her kit and spread out the vibrant colored batiks in shades of blue and green with yellow, orange, and gold highlights swirling randomly throughout. Meanwhile, another five or six women took seats around the room.

Stephanie had already pinned a sample wallhanging to the front wall. Looking at it closely, Sarah could see that the background was pieced with varying shades of neutral batiks. On this background, Stephanie had appliquéd a vase of gracefully arranged flowers, one flower actually extending beyond the background and onto the outer border. It was this detail that had caused Sarah to choose this particular project. She loved the concept of things refusing to remain inside their assigned boundaries.

“Hi, folks,” Stephanie announced, beaming as she walked into the room. “It looks like everyone is here.” She started the class right away after introductions. The first step was to make the simple background for their wallhanging. Stephanie passed out instruction sheets and encouraged people to read the whole sheet before starting. They then cut the squares, rearranged them until they were happy with the placement, and sewed them together to form a background piece about twelve inches square. They then added a one-inch inner border and a three-inch outer border. As each student completed this base, they were ready to meet with Stephanie individually to learn how to cut and apply the vase and flowers.

Sarah was pleased with her background and borders. She caught on quickly to the needle-turn appliqué technique Stephanie was teaching. Sarah smiled to herself as she stitched.

The class broke for lunch, and Sarah excitedly rushed back to the stateroom to show Sophie and Charles her handiwork. Both rooms were empty, so she freshened up and headed for what had become their favorite place to sit and watch the coastline in the far distance. Just as she suspected, Sophie and Charles were stretched out on deck chairs, both covered with towels. The sun was very strong that day but felt delightful as Sarah joined her friends. “How about some lunch?” she suggested as she sat down.

“Well hello there, pretty lady,” Charles said as he sat up. “How much time
